Introduction

Vietnamese sentence structure follows a Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) pattern, similar to English. However, understanding Vietnamese grammar requires learning about word order, classifiers, and question formation.

Basic Sentence Pattern (SVO)

Subject + Verb + Object

Tôi ăn cơm
[toy an gum]
I eat rice (Subject-Verb-Object)
Anh học tiếng Việt
[ang hock tee-eng vee-et]
You study Vietnamese
Chị đọc sách
[chee dawk sahk]
She reads books

Question Formation

Yes/No Questions

Add "không" at the end to form yes/no questions:

Anh ăn cơm không?
[ang an gum khome]
Do you eat rice? (statement + không)
Chị thích cà phê không?
[chee tick gah feh khome]
Do you like coffee?

Wh-Questions

Question words in Vietnamese:

Anh tên là gì?
[ang ten lah zee]
What is your name? (gì = what)
Anh ở đâu?
[ang uh doh]
Where are you? (đâu = where)
Bây giờ là mấy giờ?
[bay zuh lah may zuh]
What time is it? (mấy = how many/what)
Tại sao anh học tiếng Việt?
[tie sow ang hock tee-eng vee-et]
Why do you study Vietnamese? (tại sao = why)

Negation

Using "không" for Negation

Place "không" before the verb to make negative statements:

Tôi không ăn thịt
[toy khome an tit]
I don't eat meat
Anh không thích cà phê
[ang khome tick gah feh]
You don't like coffee
Tôi không hiểu
[toy khome hee-ew]
I don't understand

Adjectives and Descriptive Phrases

Adjective Placement

Adjectives come AFTER the noun in Vietnamese:

Một cái áo đẹp
[moat kai ao dep]
A beautiful shirt (lit. "one shirt beautiful")
Quả táo đỏ
[gwah tow daw]
Red apple (apple red)
Người phụ nữ cao
[nguh-oy foo noo gow]
Tall woman (woman tall)

Common Classifiers

Noun Classifiers

Classifiers are used between numbers and nouns:

Một con chó
[moat gon chaw]
One dog (con = classifier for animals)
Hai cái bàn
[hai kai ban]
Two tables (cái = general classifier for objects)
Ba người bạn
[bah nguh-oy ban]
Three friends (người = classifier for people)

Practice Tips

SVO Pattern: Start with simple SVO sentences and gradually add more details.

Question Words: Memorize common question words: gì (what), đâu (where), ai (who), bao giờ (when), tại sao (why), như thế nào (how).

Adjective Order: Remember that adjectives always come AFTER the noun, opposite to English.

Classifiers: Learn common classifiers: con (animals), cái (objects), người (people), quả (round objects), cuốn (books).
